Apple has officially launched Retention Messaging, a new tool that allows App Store developers to encourage users to keep their subscriptions when they attempt to cancel. The feature, first announced at WWDC 2026, is now available to developers.
With Retention Messaging, developers can display personalized messages, images, and special offers directly within the subscription cancellation process. These messages give developers an opportunity to remind users of subscription benefits or offer incentives before they complete a cancellation.
For example, an app could offer users several months of free access, a discounted subscription price, or an alternative subscription plan. Developers can also use messages and images to highlight features that users would lose if they cancel.
Developers can configure these messages through App Store Connect for their auto-renewable subscriptions. They can specify subscriber eligibility and set waiting periods between messages. Each app can have up to 10 retention messages, with each message associated with one or more subscriptions.
For more advanced customization, Apple also provides a Retention Messaging API. Developers can use it to select which message to display based on individual subscribers' subscription details. API access is currently available by request.
Retention Messaging builds on Apple's existing Win-Back Offers, introduced in 2024. However, the two features serve different purposes: Win-Back Offers target former subscribers who have already canceled, while Retention Messaging reaches users before they complete the cancellation process.
The new feature gives developers another way to improve subscriber retention while allowing users to reconsider their subscriptions before making a final decision.
Subscription cancellations remain a challenge for app developers, particularly for services competing for users' recurring spending. Apple's Retention Messaging provides a more direct way to address cancellations by presenting relevant offers at the right moment.
For users, this could mean more opportunities to access subscription services at lower prices. However, it will also be important for Apple to ensure that promotional messages don't make the cancellation process unnecessarily complicated.
