The mystery of the iCoins came to light last week, when an Imgur user called greatease posted a photo of a penny inside his Macbook Pro.

This mystery coin appeared to be wedged inside the computer’s SuperDrive, which is used to play DVDs or CDs.

“I found a penny inside my MacBook Pro and can’t work out how the f***it got there,” he wrote.

A subsequent probe by Gizmodo revealed that several people had also found coins within their Macbooks.

Several other people found pennies or quarters “sealed under plastic” beneath their own Macbook SuperDrive, prompting the website to ask: “Is Apple putting coins inside our SuperDrives on purpose?”

Many of the people who found coins in their laptops suggested there was no way for it to get there.

On the forum of the Apple news website Mac Rumours, one Macbook owner wrote: “Today when I was taking the bottom plate off of my Macbook (for the first time ever) I noticed a canadian quarter sealed in plastic above the optical drive.

“I’ve never taken the bottom plate off before, it’s sealed in completely, and I can’t see a possible way for it to have gotten in there post manufacture.”

However, there may be a rather dull explanation: the coins found their way into the SuperDrive by accident.
