Apple announced that its App Store set a new sales record on 01 January, of USD 240 million. This followed a strong 2016, with developers earning 40 percent more than the previous year on their products in the app store, Apple said. In December alone purchases on the store topped USD 3 billion.
The launch of Nintendo’s Super Mario Run drove year-end traffic on the site, generating more than 40 million downloads in just four days after its release. It was the most downloaded app globally on Christmas and New Year’s Day. Super Mario Run was also among last year’s top 10 most downloaded apps worldwide. Pokemon Go took the top spot.
The App Store offers 2.2 million apps in total, up over 20 percent year-on-year. This includes over 20,000 offering subscription services, which grew by 74 percent in 2016 to revenues of USD 2.7 billion. The App Store's top-grossing markets included the US, China, Japan and the UK, with China experiencing record year-over-year growth of 90 percent.
