Almost Two-thirds of Americans Own at Least an Apple Product

64 percent of Americans own Apple products, with the average U.S. household owning more than two, a new poll claims.

The survey, carried out by CNBC, suggests that Apple ownership is a trait shared by every income group, age demographic, race, sex, and region of the United States, although the ownership rate falls below 50 percent for those on incomes under $30,000, retirees, and women over the age of 50.

It also rises to 87 percent for those with incomes in excess of $100,000. The richest households own an average of 4.7 products per household, compared with just one for the poorest, while those in the West own an average of 3.7, next to 2.2 in the South.

Perhaps most significant is the fact that the percentage of Americans who own Apple products has increased 14 percent versus five years ago, when “just” 50 percent answered in the affirmative. The average number of devices per household had also increased by an average of one product per house in the timeframe. By comparison, Apple’s market cap has increased around $200 billion during that same time frame.

“I cannot think of any other product — especially any other product at a high price point — that has that kind of permeation with the public and level of growth,” said Jay Campbell, pollster with Hart Research, which carried out the survey.

The poll was conducted with 800 respondents across the United States, and reportedly has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.

Early this year, another report placed Apple as the U.S.’s “most intimate” brand — meaning one that, “leverages and strengthens the emotional bonds between a person and a brand.” In this capacity, it beat out rivals including Disney, Amazon, Harley Davidson, Netflix, Nintendo, Samsung, Whole Foods, BMW and Toyota.
