Back in 2015 I wrote about the iMac losing one of its best features, Target Display mode. There were hopes Apple would address the issue with the new iMacs it announced a few weeks ago, but when its online documentation failed to list the new iMac among the supported iMac models, it didn’t look good.

And now an Apple spokesperson has confirmed the bad news: the new 2017 iMacs will not support Target Display mode. Furthermore, the spokesperson says the feature may never make a re-appearance.

For many users, the fuss around Apple’s decision to drop support for Target Display mode altogether with the 2015 iMac was a head-scratcher. For average users, it has no impact whatsoever.

However, Target Display mode allowed someone with an Apple laptop to connect that MacBook to an iMac using a Thunderbolt cable and use the iMac as an external display. With a keyboard combo, they could easily switch back and forth between showing the iMac's own display, and the laptop’s display. It was a great workflow booster for people with this specific configuration, let the iMac do double duty and also gave a second life to an older iMac that was getting old to be useful otherwise.
