A new teardown of the iPhone 18 Pro Max has confirmed an unexpected difference between the U.S. model and versions sold in other markets.

According to TechInsights, the U.S. version of the iPhone 18 Pro Max is equipped with Qualcomm's Snapdragon X80 modem, while Apple uses its own C2 modem in the same model in other countries.

The finding confirms earlier indications from the device's modem firmware that pointed to the Snapdragon X80.

U.S. iPhone 18 Pro Max Uses Qualcomm's Snapdragon X80

The U.S. iPhone 18 Pro Max is currently the only iPhone 18 model known to use Qualcomm's modem.

Apple's modem lineup is reportedly split as follows:

  ●iPhone 18 Pro: Apple C2 modem worldwide

  ●iPhone Duo: Apple C2 modem worldwide

  ●iPhone 18 Pro Max: C2 modem outside the U.S.

  ●U.S. iPhone 18 Pro Max: Qualcomm Snapdragon X80

This makes the U.S. version of the iPhone 18 Pro Max particularly unusual within Apple's latest iPhone lineup.

iPhone 18 Pro Max Also Gets a New mmWave Antenna

TechInsights also identified a new mmWave 5G antenna module designed by Apple inside the U.S. version of the iPhone 18 Pro Max.

For comparison, both the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max used Qualcomm's Snapdragon X80 modem worldwide.

Apple's move to its own C2 modem across most iPhone 18 models therefore represents a significant change in its modem strategy.

C2 vs. Snapdragon X80 Performance Remains Unknown

The teardown confirms the hardware difference, but it does not tell us which modem performs better in real-world conditions.

We'll need independent testing to compare the C2 modem and Snapdragon X80 in areas such as:

  ●5G download and upload speeds

  ●mmWave performance

  ●Network stability

  ●Power consumption

  ●Signal strength

  ●Cellular performance in weak-signal areas

Until those tests are available, there is no clear way to determine how the two modems compare in everyday use.

Why Does the U.S. Model Still Use Qualcomm?

Apple has not explained why the U.S. iPhone 18 Pro Max continues to use a Qualcomm modem while other versions have switched to the C2.

One possible explanation is related to Apple's existing agreement with Qualcomm.

In 2023, Qualcomm announced that it would continue supplying smartphone modems to Apple through 2026. The U.S.-only use of the Snapdragon X80 could potentially be related to Apple's existing contractual arrangements, although Apple has not confirmed this.

Other technical or carrier-related factors could also explain the difference.

Apple's C2 Modem Finally Adds U.S. mmWave Support

The C2 modem also represents a major step forward for Apple's in-house modem technology.

Unlike Apple's previous C1 and C1X modems, the C2 supports mmWave 5G in the U.S.

Qualcomm's modems have supported U.S. mmWave 5G since the iPhone 12 generation, meaning Apple's custom modem technology has now caught up in this area.

Apple also says the C2 provides meaningfully faster upload speeds than the C1X while consuming around 15% less power.

Apple Is Gradually Moving Away From Qualcomm

The modem split in the iPhone 18 lineup highlights Apple's ongoing transition toward internally designed cellular technology.

While Qualcomm remains present in the U.S. iPhone 18 Pro Max, Apple's C2 modem is now used across most of the new lineup worldwide.

The real test will come when independent benchmarks compare the C2 against Qualcomm's Snapdragon X80. Those results should provide a clearer picture of how far Apple's custom modem technology has progressed.
