Apple’s CEO had previously expressed how learning to code is an important skill that students should learn. His opinion also reflects some of Apple’s initiatives, such as the Everyone Can Code education curriculum which last year expanded outside of the US. Now in a press release, Apple is boasting at how 70 education institutions in Europe have since adopted its program.

Apple today announced 70 colleges and universities in Europe have adopted Everyone Can Code, a comprehensive program designed by Apple to help everyone learn to build mobile apps. These colleges and universities are adopting Apple’s App Development with Swift curriculum, helping to create opportunities for all students and equipping them with the skills they need to pursue careers in the booming app economy.”

Cook also adds, “Coding is an essential skill for today’s workforce, and through Everyone Can Code, we’re giving people around the world the power to learn, write and teach coding. Since launching Everyone Can Code two years ago, we’ve seen growing excitement for the initiative from schools around the world, who are increasingly incorporating the curriculum into their classrooms.”

Apple isn’t alone in trying to promote coding as a “basic” skill that schools should implement. Given today’s technology-driven landscape where creating apps for different devices and platforms is a very viable career, knowing how to code, at least knowing the basics, could come in handy in the future.
