The Oppo Find X Features A Pop-Up Camera System, 50W Fast Charging; Runs ColorOS Inspired by iOS

Earlier this week, Oppo — one of the largest smartphone manufacturers in the world — unveiled its new flagship handset: the Find X. While Chinese companies launch a new smartphone almost every other week, the Find X sets the bar high in terms of innovation. And it does so without copying Apple.

The Find X features an almost bezel-less screen at its front. There’s a small bottom chin, but unlike the iPhone X, there’s no notch at the top. Instead, the 6.4-inch display extends to the very top with the earpiece pushed to the very top of the bezel. So, what happens to the front camera then? Well, Oppo has implemented a pop-up camera on the Find X. So, yeah, the whole front camera — and the rear camera — pops up from the phone as shown in the GIF below.

It is this unique design which allows the Find X to feature a 93.8 percent screen-to-body ratio.

Oppo is extremely confident of the pop-up camera system and says that the camera opens in just 0.5 seconds. The Find X does away with a fingerprint scanner and instead relies on 3D facial recognition using the front camera. This means every time you want to unlock your Find X, the motos will pop the top part of the phone to reveal the 25MP front camera. The pop-up part also houses the rear 16MP + 20MP rear camera. Anytime you open the camera app or any app that makes use of the camera, the motors will push the whole camera housing to the top.

Other specs of the Find X are also truly top-notch. It houses a 6.4-inch curved 1080p+ OLED display, a Snapdragon 845 chipset, 8GB RAM, 256GB storage, and a massive 3,730mAh battery with Oppo’s VOOC fast charging support. It runs on Android 8.1 Oreo with Oppo’s ColorOS on top of it.

As if the design of the Find X was not already unique, Oppo is also launching a Lamborghini edition of the handset. Apart from some design enhancements, it will come with the company’s new Super VOOC fast charging technology. The bundled 50W charger will be able to charge the handset from 0-100 percent in just 30 minutes! If Oppo’s claims are true, this would be by far the fastest fast charging implementation on the market, though it remains to be seen if this would have any negative effect on the lifespan of the battery.

On the software front, the Find X runs on Android 8.1 Oreo with Oppo’s heavy ColorOS skin on top of it. If you have never used ColorOS, then all you need to know about it is that Oppo has done its best to imitate the UI and UX of iOS. It is still nowhere near as good as iOS though, and its the software which is perhaps going to be the Achilles Heel of this device.

Thanks to the unique design, Oppo is ensuring the Find X has a wider launch than any of its previous devices. It would be launching the Find X in Europe and North America soon, with the phone already going up for order in China from this week.
