The Game Developers Conference runs from March 19th until March 23th at Moscone Center in San Francisco.

Tim Cook has made it clear that Apple is focused and very bullish on the future of augmented reality. iOS 11 introduced a new ARKit framework for developers to bring the technology to their apps, and iOS 11.3 includes ARKit 1.5.

Now, Apple’s head ARKit engineer is slated to give a public talk about the company’s work in augmented reality…

Apple to Lead

Michael Kuhn, head of Apple’s ARKit engineering, is on the schedule to give an “Introduction to Apple’s ARKit” at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco next month.

According to the GDC website, the talk will focus on the “core concepts” of ARKit, as well as various other features and technologies behind the platform.

This session introduces core concepts of the ARKit framework, it’s underlying principles, and the ARKit API. It explains how to get started with ARKit using the different tracking and scene understanding capabilities as well integration into rendering/game engines.

The session also highlights best practices for AR like starting an experience, placing objects in the real world, interacting with them and implications for games. In addition it explains basic concepts and challenges of AR and Computer Vision to help avoid common pitfalls and allow the creation of great experiences.

Michael Kuhn is the head of Apple’s ARKit engineering team and joined the company in 2015. He’s worked in the augmented reality engineering field since 2005.

It’ll be interesting to hear Kuhn’s talk given how invested Apple is in augmented reality. Tim Cook has repeatedly touted that he views AR as a fundamental technology, saying that he regards it as “a big idea like the smartphone.”
